Alfa Romeo Duetto Celebrates 60 Years with Grand Monterey Tribute
Monterey Car Week 2026 is set to host a spectacular celebration of Italian automotive heritage, with the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider “Duetto” taking center stage for its 60th anniversary. Pininfarina, in collaboration with Concorso Italiano and the Monterey Motorsports Festival, has announced a dedicated “Duetto Day” on Saturday, August 15, 2026, honoring one of the most beloved and enduring roadsters ever created.
The announcement, which recently surfaced in the classic car news sphere, highlights the timeless appeal and cultural significance of the Duetto, a vehicle that has transcended mere transportation to become a symbol of Italian style, freedom, and open-road adventure.
A Design Masterpiece from Pininfarina

The Alfa Romeo Spider, affectionately known as the “Duetto,” first captured global attention upon its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. Its distinctive design, characterized by elegant, slender, and rounded shapes with a downward-sloping bonnet and boot, earned it the charming nickname “osso di seppia” or “cuttlefish bone.” This groundbreaking aesthetic was the brainchild of the legendary design house Pininfarina, and notably, it was the very last project personally overseen by its founder, Battista “Pinin” Farina.
Despite being officially named the Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider, the moniker “Duetto” emerged from a public naming competition and quickly became synonymous with the car, even though trademark issues prevented its official adoption beyond the initial year. Its cultural footprint was indelibly stamped when a red Duetto featured prominently in the 1967 Hollywood classic “The Graduate,” driven by a young Dustin Hoffman, further cementing its status as an icon of the 1960s.
Duetto Day: A Tribute to an Automotive Legend
The upcoming “Duetto Day” promises a multi-faceted celebration across the prestigious Monterey Peninsula. The festivities will commence at Concorso Italiano, where a dedicated area will showcase a magnificent array of Alfa Romeo Spiders. Here, an exceptional example of the model will be honored with the “Concorso Italiano Duetto Award.”
In the afternoon, participating Duetto owners will embark on a spirited convoy, driving their prized vehicles to the Monterey Motorsports Festival. The classic roadsters will be featured in a special celebratory display on the festival grounds, allowing thousands of automotive enthusiasts to admire their beauty and heritage. The day's events will culminate with an exclusive Pininfarina gathering along the iconic Cannery Row, overlooking Monterey Bay. During this evening event, Pininfarina CEO Paolo Dellachà is expected to present the “Pininfarina Duetto Award” to the finest preserved example of the legendary model.
The Enduring Legacy of a Global Icon
The Alfa Romeo Spider, including its iconic Duetto first series, enjoyed a remarkable production run from 1966 to 1994, spanning four distinct generations and selling over 124,000 units, making it one of Alfa Romeo's longest-lived and most popular models globally. Its lightweight chassis, responsive handling, and spirited twin-cam inline-four engine, initially a 1.6-liter unit, offered an engaging driving experience that prioritized driver connection over raw power.
This anniversary celebration during Monterey Car Week, a global mecca for automotive connoisseurs, underscores the enduring passion for classic cars and the dedication to preserving automotive history and design excellence. Owners of Duettos are warmly invited to register their vehicles for participation, with the first 15 registrants receiving a special commemorative Pininfarina gift, adding another layer of allure to this already exciting event. As the automotive world looks forward to August, the “Duetto Day” promises to be a memorable tribute to a true masterpiece of Italian engineering and design.
