Porsche Celebrates 50 Years of Transaxle with Innovative Pop-Up Exhibitions
Stuttgart, Germany – Porsche’s Heritage and Museum team has unveiled an exciting new initiative, “Forever Young. Celebrating Transaxle,” a dynamic series of pop-up exhibitions designed to commemorate 50 years since the groundbreaking transaxle architecture entered series production. This innovative approach moves beyond traditional museum displays, offering compact, flexible installations that provide evolving perspectives on the technology, design, motorsport, and cultural spirit of the transaxle era.
A Half-Century of Balance and Innovation

The transaxle design, which places the engine at the front and the transmission at the rear, was a pivotal development for Porsche, offering superior weight distribution and handling. This architecture defined a significant chapter in the marque’s history, spanning from 1976 to 1995. During this period, nearly 400,000 vehicles across four iconic model lines – the 924, 928, 944, and 968 – utilized this layout, solidifying its legacy as a distinctive approach to automotive balance.
Initially emerging in the 1970s, the transaxle concept truly hit its stride and achieved widespread commercial success in the 1980s. This decade marked a period of remarkable convergence for the transaxle models, not just technologically and stylistically, but also in public perception. These cars offered a different kind of Porsche experience, broadening the brand's appeal while maintaining its core tenets of engineering excellence and driving pleasure.
Pop-Up Exhibitions Bring History to Life
Rather than a single, static special exhibition, Porsche is embracing a modern “pop-up” concept for this year-long celebration. “We have planned a series of pop-ups throughout the year: compact, flexible and offering constantly evolving perspectives on technology, design, motorsport and the spirit of the times,” explains Iris Haker, curator at the Porsche Museum. This format promises to surprise enthusiasts with diverse narrative angles, not only at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen but also at selected locations beyond. The opening presentation at the Porsche Museum is currently on display until June 7, 2026.
The installations are crafted to revisit the transaxle past from a present-day perspective, drawing on the vibrant cultural context of the 1980s to bring this era vividly to life. Visitors can expect immersive experiences that delve into the interplay of technology, design, and motorsport that characterized these decades. A key highlight of the celebration will be the themed weekends known as “Transaxle Meet.” The inaugural “Transaxle Meet – Spring Edition” is scheduled for May 23 and 24, 2026, offering a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to gather and share their passion.
These events will also feature curator talks, providing in-depth insights into the technical innovations, design philosophies, and historical context that shaped the transaxle era. It’s an opportunity for both seasoned collectors and new admirers to deepen their understanding and appreciation for these remarkable vehicles and the era they defined.
Celebrating a Timeless Legacy
The “Forever Young. Celebrating Transaxle” initiative underscores Porsche’s commitment to honoring its rich heritage while embracing innovative ways to engage its global community. By highlighting a period often characterized by technological progress and stylistic freedom, Porsche aims to connect with enthusiasts on a deeper, more personal level. This series of events ensures that the legacy of the transaxle models – the sleek 924, the powerful 928, the versatile 944, and the refined 968 – remains “forever young” in the hearts and minds of automotive aficionados worldwide. The blend of historical reverence with a forward-thinking exhibition format truly exemplifies the enduring passion at the core of classic car culture.
